Fuel cell
Question:
Has GE put sale the domestic version yet? I believe there is a prototype fuel cell car around that looks like it may be a reality. Any info and web site? thanks —

So go out, do a google search, and find out for yourself. He gave a good answer, and you go hostile on him. Sheesh…they’re coming out of the woodwork this week… Dave

I’d rather they release it when it’s ready, than when it’s not. Dave "Do you want that right, or right away…" Hinz

Anyone remember Ford and their revolutionary ‘new’ sodium sulfur battery? http://www.americanhistory.si.edu/scienceservice/001023.htm > 1967 Ford Motor Company has demonstrated a major breakthrough in its efforts > to develop a feasible power source for electric vehicles.
Every few years they would have a media blitz announcing how they just invented this amazing battery technology. Each time they were going to start building cars with them ’soon’. Popular Science even had it appear in their ‘25 years ago today’ section while in the same year another issue had it under their ‘What’s New’. Can you buy a Ford car using this technology? No. In fact, the only electric vehicles sold by Ford use lead acid batteries. After 34 years perhaps it’s time to admit that they won’t be leading the world in electric car technology. I’ve seen enough of this kind of stuff over the years, from Moller and his ’skycar’ (always in development but never off the ground) to all those guys with their perpetual motion devices, that I’m not going to hold my breath over some fancy advertising either. There is always one reason or another why you can’t buy the actual product but you can always buy T-shirts, books, plans, stocks or the like. Anthony

They are a public company, that must strike a balance between honesty and keeping current and potential share-holders excited. BTW, if the original question was about a direct methanol fuel cell, it is simple in principle but very difficult in practice. If it is about an alcohol (ethanol or methanol) reforming fuel cell power plant, it is difficult in both theory and practice. And Steve, you must stay busy with all the battery back-up and the fuel cell work too. Or were you talking about something else in reply to Jim? :) Jim, in this case hoity-toity is the appropriate level of concern. Reformers are non-trivial chemical processing plants. I still would like to build my own sometime, but I have worked with those built by others long enough to get a strong feeling about critical design factors. I think reformer will be as ubiquitous a term as toaster in about 7-15 years. Then hoity-toity can go in the dumper. JF

Dont forget that in addition to controlling the British Crown and keeping the metric system down, the Stone Cutters also hold back the development of the electric car. Geez, I thought that everyone knew this. John.

Possibly not. The University of Pennsylvania developed a fuel cell that will run on diesel fuel, without a reformer. They say the process is similar to fuel injection in internal combustion engines. There’s a writeup here: www.upenn.edu/pennnews/releases/2001/Q3/gorte0901.html Dean

There’s a writeup here: www.upenn.edu/pennnews/releases/2001/Q3/gorte0901.html This site says: PENN ENGINEERS DEVELOP FUEL CELL THAT USES LIQUID DIESEL, THE FIRST SUCH DEVICE TO RUN ON A WIDELY AVAILABLE FUEL Not quite so. I know a British company developed one (name escapes me) that uses petrol. It was viewed as the better approach because of the existing fuel and distribution system, or at least an excellent interim measure.
